Character Animation
Every gesture and expression of Kami was made possible by designing the characters with a sense of believability in design with expressive realism in their eyes and facial articulation range of motion.
Visual Style
Inspired by various Japanese animation of watercolor painting backgrounds, Kami's art direction was developed to explore the technical challenges of rethinking depth of field in the form of transitioning between 3D and 2D levels of detail and aesthetics. The world of Kami weaves together ethereal watercolor environments of vibrancy with stylized high-detail characters in the foreground to achieve a unique take on visual storytelling.
Music & Sound Design
The soundscape draws from ancient Japanese instruments and ambient nature sounds, creating an immersive sonic world that blurs the boundary between the seen and unseen.
Storytelling
Kami explores the fragile remnants of a fading mind. When an elderly woman wanders into a quiet barbershop, she meets a young man who remembers her from a time she can no longer recall. She sits in his chair, and a strange magic takes hold—as her silver hair is cut away, the years roll backward, untangling her lost memories and binding two souls together in a breathtaking, timeless reunion.
